HoppyPy is a free, interactive Python course for complete beginners. No sign-up and nothing to install: open your browser, write code, and run it. You follow Hoppy, a little pixel frog, through a digital forest. Each level helps Hoppy out of a small jam, and teaches you one Python move along the way.

Why HoppyPy exists

The person behind HoppyPy started out not knowing how to write Python either. In 2025, trying to build products with AI-written code alone hit a wall fast: the code ran, but it was hard to read, scary to change, and impossible to steer once the project grew.

So came a slightly wild decision: use AI to build a site that teaches Python, then use that site to actually learn Python.

That is still the whole idea. HoppyPy wants beginners to experiment safely, make mistakes without worry, and turn Python into a skill they can really use. Now that AI can write code for you, being able to read it and change it matters more, not less.

Every course sits on one course tree. Start with the core path to build solid Python basics, then branch out into what interests you. Complete beginners simply start with the first course.

Common questions

Is HoppyPy really free?
Yes. Every live course is free, there is no sign-up, and there are no ads. The site is a labor of love, kept going by its maker and by learners who choose to chip in.
Do I need to install Python first?
No. Code runs right in your browser (powered by Pyodide). Open a lesson and you can write and run code immediately.
Can I start with zero experience?
Yes. The first course, Hoppy's First Leap, starts from your very first line of code and covers one idea per lesson.
Where is my progress saved?
In the browser you are using. If you switch devices or browsers, or clear site data, your progress will not come with you.
Who can I talk to about problems or ideas?
